Tony Stark has faced a number of villains played by a number of well-known and likable actors – from Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane and Mickey Rourke as Ivan “Whiplash” Vanko to Tom Hiddleston as Loki in “The Avengers” coming in just a few more weeks. But while we don’t know who Iron Man will face next, we do know who’s going to play the villain and maybe even what the dasdardly villain might do.
Variety exclusively broke the news that Sir Ben Kingsley, fresh off his role in Martin Scorsese’s award-winning “Hugo” and is currently working on the “Ender’s Game” adaptation (which earlier saw its release date move from March 15th to November 1st, 2013) , is set to play the villain in writer-director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3. He will join returning cast Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Done Cheadle, and Scarlett Johansson.
Disney’s Iron Man 3, coming May 3rd, 2013, is loosely based upon “Extremis”, a six-issue comic by Warren Ellis published in 2005 that introduced nanotechnology to the Iron Man universe. While it is confirmed that Kingsley’s villain is expected to be involved in nanotechnology, he will not play “the Mandarin”, a longtime foe of Iron Man.
Excited about this casting choice? Who could he play? You can see Kingsley in Sacha Baron Cohen’s comedy “The Dictator” this summer, and watch Iron Man battle Loki and an alien invasion along with other Marvel heroes on May 4th in “The Avengers”.
