Francis Lawrence, the visionary helmer of hits such as Constantine and I Am Legend has entered negotiations to direct the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire. Catching Fire, coming November 22nd, 2013, will see the return of Jennifer Lawrence (no relation to Francis), Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, and Donald Sutherland as the villainous President Snow. Lawrence reportedly beat out Bennett Miller, the director of Moneyball, among a list of other directors whose visions of Panem could have been fascinating.
Last week, Gary Ross stepped away from directing the sequel due to the tight shooting schedule set for this summer to accommodate all the actors, including Jennifer Lawrence, who is reprising her role as Mystique in Matthew Vaughn’s untitled X-Men First Class sequel.
Francis Lawrence, who last directed “Water for Elephants” and the pilot for Fox’s “Touch” and ABC’s “Gotham”, is – in my opinion, a great choice. One viewing of the unrated alternate cut of “I Am Legend” – with its controversial and amazing ending – proves he can recreate the world of the Hunger Games with breathtaking scope. What are your thoughts on this choice?
