San Diego Comic-Con blows away movie fans every year, and this year was certainly no exception. Check out the epic trailers and nuggets from this year’s Comic-Con.
Although filming is not ready to begin until this August, viral marketing already began on Jose Padilha’s remake of the sci-fi classic, RoboCop. Joel Kinnaman is set to star as Alex Murphy/RoboCop, Gary Oldman as the chief scientist and engineer, Samuel L. Jackson as a media mogul, and Hugh Laurie as the cold CEO of OmniCorp.
In 2029, OmniCorp’s drone and robots have won America’s wars and they are ready to bring their battlefield expertise to the homefront. When Detroit officer Alex Murphy, a loving husband and devoted father, is left for dead, OmniCorp resurrects Murphy as RoboCop. But as the officer and scientist who created him battle the ethics of replacing humanity for technology, a darker plot is revealed. The Sony/MGM film hits theaters August 9th, 2013, and you can check out OmniCorp’s promotional video below, with a first look at the ED-209 and a brief glimpse at RoboCop!
On September 7th, 2012 director Ruben Fleischer takes audiences to Los Angeles, 1949, where a ruthless Mickey Cohen (played by Sean Penn) holds an iron grip on the city’s crime in The Gangster Squad. But when a band of LAPD cops – including Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling – threaten to take down Cohen’s empire, an all-out war brews in a based-in-fact action drama that also stars Emma Stone, Michael Pena, Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi, and Anthony Mackie. Based on his own short film, Tim Burton’s new 3D black and white stop-action animated film, Frankenweenie, tells the story of young Victor. When Victor unexpectedly loses his beloved dog Sparky, he uses a little mad science to bring his best friend back to life. But when Sparky gets out, it leads to a hilarious and unexpected chain of events in his sleepy little town. The Disney film arrives October 5th, 2012 and features the voices of Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, and Atticus Shaffer. You can see the Comic-Con Homage trailer below!
While everyone knows the tale of Dorothy’s trip over the rainbow in The Wizard of Oz, how much do you actually know about the mysterious Wizard himself? Sam Raimi imagines the origins of the Wizard for the first time in Disney’s Oz, The Great and Powerful. Oscar Diggs (played by James Franco), a small-time circus magician with little room for ethics finds his way from the plains of Kansas to the wonderful world of Oz, he discovers his chance at fame and fortune. That is, until he meets the three witches: Theodora, Evanora, and Glenda (played respectively by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams), unconvinced of his powers. With magic and luck, Oscar searches for who is good and who is bad – and how he can become a better man. Zack Braff, Joey King, and Bruce Campbell also star in the film landing March 8th, 2013.
M. Night Shyamalan returns to the director’s chair for After Earth, a sci-fi epic from Columbia Pictures arriving June 7th, 2013. One thousand years after humans have moved from Earth to Nova Prime following a cataclysmic catastrophe leaves Earth barren and dangerous, Lieutenant General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) – a member of an influential military family dating back to the great evacuation of Earth – returns from extended duty to reunite with his family, including his 13 year old son, Kitai (played by Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith). But when an asteroid storm leaves them stranded on Earth, it’s up to Kitai to trek across the unfamiliar terrain of what was once home to search for a rescue beacon and save his father. Finally, while this is not a set-up for any film, it is still noteworthy to see Thomas Jane’s return as Frank “The Punisher” Castle in a special Comic-Con tribute film, Dirty Laundry, promoting the new Punisher logo. Watch the 10 minute film below, featuring Ron Perelman!
And let’s not forget the most anticipated film of the summer arrives this week! Watch the “Legacy” Trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, which explores the saga thus far leading into Christopher Nolan’s epic conclusion!
